On December 8, 2024, the San Diego Chapter of the Formosa Association of Student Cultural Ambassadors (FASCA-SD) proudly partnered with the San Diego Chinese Academy (SDCA) to host a cultural event centered on making tangyuan, glutinous rice balls traditionally associated with the Winter Solstice (Dongzhi). The activity provided an opportunity for FASCA-SD members to showcase their leadership, service, and commitment to cultural preservation while engaging younger students in a meaningful tradition.
FASCA-SD members began the day by assisting with event setup, preparing tables, chairs, and materials. Once the activity commenced, the team divided into two groups: one guided parents in shaping the classic pink and white tangyuan, while the other prepared vibrant, colorful dough for younger students together with SDCA volunteer board members.
Under the guidance of FASCA-SD and SDCA board members, the students brought their creativity to life, crafting tangyuan in various shapes and colors. From playful, multi-colored designs to traditional spheres, the students enjoyed a hands-on experience that connected them to the cultural significance of tangyuan as a symbol of unity and celebration.
Throughout the event, FASCA-SD volunteers displayed exceptional teamwork, adaptability, and leadership, ensuring the activity ran smoothly. “Their dedication created a fun and engaging environment, allowing students to explore Taiwanese traditions while enjoying a sense of community.” said Hung Wang, the President of SDCA Board.
After hours of collaboration and creativity, the event concluded with participants tasting the tangyuan they made, followed by a collective effort to clean up the venue. A group photo featuring FASCA-SD members and parent volunteers marked the successful conclusion of the day’s activities.
Reflecting on the significance of the event, Cultural Lecturer Irene Wang shared, “This tangyuan-making activity is not only a celebration of Taiwanese culture but also a reflection of FASCA’s mission to lead, serve, and preserve heritage. By guiding younger students in this tradition, FASCA-SD members are not only passing down cultural knowledge but also inspiring the next generation to take pride in their roots and build connections through shared experiences.”
With the event concluding in laughter and reflection, FASCA-SD reaffirmed its role as a bridge between generations, fostering leadership and cultural awareness in their community.
