San Diego, CA — January 18, 2025 — The San Diego Chapter of the Formosa Association of Student Cultural Ambassadors (FASCA-SD) proudly participated in a dynamic New Year Celebration hosted by the San Diego Chinese Art and Cultural Society (SDCACS) at the University of California at San Diego (UCSD) Price Center Theater. With approximately 300 attendees, the event featured inspiring cultural performances and a meaningful exploration of heritage, leadership, and service.
FASCA members played an integral role in the event’s success, taking charge of theater decorations, preparing gift bags, guiding guests, and assisting VIPs. These efforts showcased FASCA’s commitment to its core values while strengthening bonds with the Taiwanese overseas community, a vital partner in cultural preservation.
The celebration began with a vibrant taiko drumming performance by Asayake Taiko, capturing the audience’s attention with dynamic rhythms and energy. This was followed by a heartfelt rendition of Taiwanese folk songs by the Formosa Generation Family Chamber Music group, symbolizing the beauty of the four seasons. The highlight of the evening was the screening of Of Color and Ink, a documentary delving into the life and artistry of Chang Dai-Chien, one of the most influential Chinese artists of the 20th century. The post-screening Q&A with director Zhang Weimin provided attendees with rare insights into the 12-year journey behind the film, further deepening their understanding of Chang’s impact on the global art scene.
Reflecting on the event, Irene Wang, mentor of FASCA San Diego, remarked, “This New Year Celebration was a perfect blend of cultural immersion and personal growth for our members. Watching them step into leadership roles, provide meaningful service, and connect with their heritage through art and music was truly inspiring. Events like this reinforce the importance of cultural preservation and highlight the potential of our youth to become cultural ambassadors in their communities.”
Through their active participation, FASCA members not only gained invaluable leadership experience but also reaffirmed their dedication to cultural appreciation and service. This collaboration with the San Diego Chinese Art and Cultural Society exemplified the shared mission of preserving Taiwanese traditions and fostering connections within the broader community.
