March 29, 2025 – To commemorate Qingming Festival, also known as Tomb Sweeping Day, the San Diego Chapter of the Formosa Association of Student Cultural Ambassadors (FASCA-SD) hosted a meaningful cultural gathering at their member Jason Poliak's home. The event provided an opportunity for members to deepen their understanding of Taiwanese heritage through education, nature, and traditional cuisine.

The event began with an informative presentation exploring the history, legends, and traditions associated with the Qingming Festival. Participants learned about the festival’s significance in honoring ancestors and its connection to appreciating nature.

Following the presentation, attendees embarked on a nature walk in a nearby park, reflecting on the festival’s theme of harmony with the natural world. Surrounded by lush greenery, the experience allowed members to embrace Qingming’s emphasis on remembrance and renewal.

The highlight of the event was a hands-on cooking session featuring traditional Taiwanese dishes commonly enjoyed during the Qingming Festival. Participants prepared Gua bao (刈包) and Spring roll (潤餅), using ingredients such as cabbage, dried tofu, sliced carrots, eggs, bean sprouts, pork belly, sausage, cilantro, peanut powder, and pickled vegetables. For dessert, they crafted nougat candy with marshmallows, milk powder, freeze-dried strawberries, matcha, and assorted nuts.

The event was honored by the presence of an Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) Council Member Steve Hsieh who highlighted the importance of cultural experiences in strengthening participants’ connection to Taiwanese heritage. “This event not only deepened cultural appreciation but also showcased the role of food in traditional celebrations. Sharing these homemade dishes brought the group together, fostering a strong sense of community and pride,” said Consulting Member Peggy Han.

Qingming Festival is a time for honoring ancestors while cherishing the present and preserving traditions. This event served as a reminder of the importance of heritage, family, and togetherness, leaving participants with both full stomachs and a deeper appreciation for their cultural roots.
